One of the cutting-edge problems in current astrophysical research is the formation and evolution of galaxies similar to our Milky Way Galaxy. To investigate this problem, scientists at the Institute for Astrophysics, Göttingen, perform simulations of so-called disk galaxies. This is extremely difficult, because the size of the disk is huge compared to substructures such as spiral arms, star-forming gas clouds, and supernova explosions, which have to be taken into account. To tackle this problem, the scientists apply highly advanced computational techniques that are potentially relevant for a much broader range of applications.
