LEIBNIZ SUPERCOMPUTING CENTRE (LRZ)

The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (LRZ) is located on the research campus in Garching near Munich.

LRZ's mission

The LRZ is the computing centre for Munich's universities and for the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities. It is also a national centre for high-performance computing (HPC).

The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (LRZ) is located on the research campus in Garching near Munich. Its 170 staff members provide IT services and support for academia and industry, servicing well over 100,000 customers. Its vast IT expertise, combined with its long history of close collaborations with the Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) leads to large-scale collaborations in common research goals and in solution-driven supercomputing research.

The center features a world-class supercomputing platform and operates an extremely energy efficient facility designed to run HPC systems with the lowest possible energy footprint. LRZ’s supercomputing infrastructure prides itself in versitility. As a result, activities at the centre have expanded from an earlier focus on solving problems in physics and fluid dynamics to a wealth of scientific fields, ranging from aerospace and automotive engineering, to medicine and bioinformatics, to astrophysics and geophysics, among others.

Apart from scientific supercomputing and IT management, LRZ also is a nation-wide competence center for data communication networks, collaborating with other scientific institutions and industrial partners in a number of pilot projects.
